Keeping track of the comings and goings of the general fund budget for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences during nearly a decade of exceptional growth
has kept life interesting for me as fiscal officer for the college.
During this time I have seen the CLAS general fund budget climb from $21 million to $33 million, its external grant expenditures increase
from $4 million to $15 million, and its student credit-hour production grow from 240,000 to 340,000.

All three essays originated in classes taken through Portland State's Center for Excellence in Writing. In the open category, Sue Pesznecker took first place for her essay on Celilo Falls. In the student category, first place went to Kelle Lawrence for an essay on visiting family in Otis, Oregon. Second place went to Lucy Burningham for an essay on the Pearl District. Oregon Quarterly "is a state and regional magazine of good writing and important ideas" published by the University of Oregon. Congratulations to all three of our winners.Read about the Center for Excellence in Writing
Ronald Graham to Give Inaugural Fariborz Maseeh Lecture in Mathematical Sciences
There is no question that computers have had a dramatic impact on what mathematicians do and on how they do it. However, there is increasing evidence that even apparently simple problems may in fact be forever beyond any conceivable computer approach. Professor Ronald Graham will describe a variety of mathematical problems in which computers have had, may have or will probably never have a significant role in their solutions. Please join us May 17 at 7 PM in 75 Lincoln Hall for Professor Graham's lecture: "Mathematics and Computers: Recent Successes and Insurmountable Challenges." The lecture is free and open to the public. Professor Graham's visit to Portland State is supported by a grant from the Massiah Foundation.Read about Professor Graham Read more about the Maseeh Lecture
Katrine Barber's Death of Celilo Falls Published
History Professor Katrine Barber recently had her book Death of Celilo Falls published by the University of Washington Press. It examines the impact The Dalles Dam (erected on the Columbia River in 1957)
had on the communities of Celilo Village and The Dalles, particularly the loss of sustainable Indian fishing and the gain of both modern hydroelectric power and increased river navigation.
